Living in New Zealand. The World's Safest Country.

Kia Ora..........I'm Wally Royal. A Maori (NZ native) who has been an Australian resident for the last 30 years. I started writing about 'safe' way back in 2001.

It was personal.

In the New York September 11 event, I thought my sister and her husband were up in the World Trade Towers. Thankfully she wasn't. They were there 3 days earlier....how close was that?

......as I said, it was personal.

I mean about 'safe.'

I asked myself, what is 'safe?' - what is it? - where do you find it? is it a condition or a place? how do you get it? what is a precise definition of safe? what other factors does it inherently attract? Wikipedia says this:"

......the state of being "safe," the condition of being protected against physical, social, spiritual, financial, political, emotional, psychological, educational or other types or consequences of failure, damage, error, accidents, harm or any other event which could be considered non-desirable. This can take the form of being protected from the event or from exposure to something that causes health or economical losses. It can include protection of people or of possessions.

All of those factors are encompassed in a tiny country too far from anywhere important. Too far south of the equator to miss typhoons and wild wind storms. Too far north of Antartica to experience any real freezing cold weather. And physically, too far away from other nations that might invade, both militarily (not important enough?), and in this case, too far for illegal immigrants to sail to.

New Zealand.

A story within the last year tells of a boatload of illegal immigrants who set out from Indonesia for New Zealand. They thought they were going to live in New Zealand (the word illegal wasn't in their vocabulary). They didn't even get halfway there. The boat turned around and went home. Seas were too rough, and it was too far! New Zealand was 'safe' because of the distance. Location actually means something quite different in this case.

….you’ve got to feel safe ‘inside’……

Safe is an important emotional condition. You've got to feel safe inside. You've got to 'know' you're safe without looking at your surround, with your eyes closed. It's an internal thing created by external surrounds and circumstances.

As a prospective migrant, 'safe' has got to be in the first 3 categories of you moving countries.

Possibly #1. Money is not always the prime motivation......read in the report some of the stories from people who have had all of that in an unsafe country. And moved to a lower income. Just because their children can play 'safe' on the New Zealand streets, outside their front door.

This country can now almost guarantee you 'safe' conditions. Of course there's always the chance of a negative happening. ALL countries have that possibility. New Zealand just has a lower expectation of those things.

This whole report is based on the EIU status that says in June 2009, New Zealand was ranked as the country most at peace. They''re a World Authority on Peace........here's who they are:

The Economist Intelligence Unit was founded in 1946. It is now a leading research and advisory firm with more than 40 offices worldwide. For over 60 years, the EIUnit has delivered vital intelligence to influential decision-makers around the world. Its extensive international reach and unfettered independence makes it the most trusted and valuable resource for international companies, financial institutions, universities and government agencies.

….this is a first-look-book, for people

who just don’t know….

The 220 page report 'New Zealand - The World's Safest,' makes no pretences that it is a first-look information source. It is a simple mans look at 30 different small towns from the far north of the North Island to the deep south of the South Island. Looking through the eyes of someone who is making up their mind as to WHERE? they might emigrate to. It also will help those who want to take a month or so touring around the 2 islands - just checking things out......Thinking, "hmmmm, maybe we could live in New Zealand!" For those who've decided that 'this is it!', our report fills in many gaps with local (and I mean 'local'....as in it was written by locals, NOT governmental tourist department beaureaucrats!) knowledge. Most of it is about the sites, what to do, where to eat. That's a big help to the person driving around for a month checking everything out before deciding if migrating to New Zealand is the right thing to do.

….great information gathered by locals

who live there…….

Most of this information is really, really local. Gathered by locals who live in those towns. Some were business people who just wanted to help 'advertise' their town and see an influx of new faces. One lady from a small Hawkes Bay town wrote how a new.......ummm,...... 'house of ill repute' opened up and went bust after only 3 weeks! had to be written under the heading, 'Strange! but true' Her comment (we left this bit out) said a lot of the wives did much of the heavy harvesting during the hay season and were quite fit and farm-hand tough, (like tuff, real man's tuff!). Consequently, most of the husbands were too scared to go out after 6pm.

…they can’t help themselves -

they ARE naturally friendly…..

I have written this report as a New Zealander who has lived out of the country for the last 30 years. Someone who looks at the place through 'visitors' eyes - someone who is amazed at the friendliness of the people....(they even talk their own 'lenguage,' check out how to speak newzilun, page 168).

When you're visiting the place the people are a bonus. I've read heaps (a-n-d heaps!) of reports from overseas visitors, and those who have emigrated to New Zealand, about the friendliness of the Kiwi's. I think it's a big plus when you emigrate to that country...helps the new family feel at home. Sure you're gonna miss your Family and friends when you move. It's just part of the deal. I did. And I was only 3 hours flying time away.

They all fall over themselves helping you find your way around town - you kinda feel like......why are you being so nice? do I really need all this information just to go 2 blocks?.....so-o-o-o, OK buddy, whadda-ya-really want? huh? And that's the trouble with our big metropolis societies - in my case, Sydney. We're so freakin' paranoid. About everything!..... we see a boogey man behind every tree.

It's just their natural way! they're genuine. It's their way of life to be friendly. Totally available to help. I guess it's another way of portraying, 'safe.' It's not a put-on. It's real.

….yes, there are negatives about New Zealand.

Sure....there are negatives about New Zealand. Let's be upfront about the place. The poor insulation of the housing - the low wages. Some people say the cost of living in New Zealand is high. An Australian television program played in July '09 showed Auckland groceries (same products, exactly matched) were almost 30% cheaper than Sydney. And then, there's the rain. The rain. The rain....and the rain! And yes...there is some racism. My personal experience was I did get a bit of the 'white stick' back in the 70's when I lived there, and I was quite a successful businessman.

But today. Nothing. Personally? I see absolutely nothing. Their society is very melded. Black, white, brown, tan....they ALL meld. All seemingly living happily in each other's society. In each others pockets.

Maybe it's their inherent friendliness and the contentedness of living there. To the extent that an Indian Family (from Delhi) I had dinner with last year...were mad All Black fans!!! I asked them, 'how the heck do you people know about the All Blacks? your country only knows how to pull up stumps.... wave yellow placards with "PHHHAAW!!"....and hit sixes. " They're answer was classic...... made me quite, ummmm, humbled. "We're New Zealanders Bro...we're Kiwis!!!! this is our black shirt. Here, get this into you, have a beer."

And they were genuinely proud of it. Being a Kiwi......fffoooosh! I was quite blown away.

Here's a true story of just how their society is - so laid back and approachable.

I was visiting the Wellington area in June '09, (doing some research), and was waiting for others to turn up outside a restaurant across the road from Parliament House. It was a one way street and I saw a copper jump out from behind a few cars in front of me and wave his little red light baton (it was about 7pm) and stop the heavy traffic dead in their tracks......... screeech!.....behind him a group of about 30 people crossed the road and wandered off into the dark towards Parliament House. I asked him what was that all about? .....'arrr, that's just the PM and his crew come across to the pub for dinner, gone back to do some work I guess!" I made a comment the only time we see any of our lot is when they have two bikes, 20 yards out in front of a whole lot of white cars, going weee-awww, weee-aww, wee-awww, doing 70 miles an hour through our main street! he laughed - "aaah, you're from over THERE are yuh! anozzie."

….no big boofy trench-coaters talking

into their sleeves…..

But walking back across the street....there was my Brother, standing on the sidewalk talking to the second most powerful man in New Zealand!!!! the Minister of Finance, the Treasurer, Bill English!...on the street! amazing. No big booffy trench coaters standing in dark doors behind him talking into their sleeves.....no sight of a copper within miles, unless you count the one who was happily directing traffic for another lot crossing the road........no security at all. Nothin'!

Am I paranoid about this 'safe' thing?....you'll probably answer, "yep! you are."

Well, my bottom line is this. If I moved anywhere in the World, anywhere,....are my loved ones safe? and then, HOW safe? In todays world, that has to be a major-major factor if I were to. In the first 5 conditions/questions of emigrating, the word 'safe' has to come up.

The worst thing that could happen to me (personally) in New Zealand - the very worst, is if some of my big fat cousins came over to visit and they became terrorists.....to my fridge! that's the worst I could think of......aww, running out of petrol on a country road in the middle of the night. You probably won't get a car past you for hours in some places. And then you'll have the problem of finding a petrol station open at that time.

If.....you're seriously looking into moving to another country, especially if you are thinking of emigrating to New Zealand, download this FREE! 24 page report on New Zealand now and then decide (if you want to hit the ground running) where to get more research.

There's a 220 page indepth report on 30 New Zealand towns/villages that will possibly save you many thousands of dollars in research. Someone said thousands of hours of research time. They're probably right - it's about 6 to 9 years of my time. It's here on this site for you to purchase after you've read the FREE! 24 page report.

For a pittance, you can learn about factors of New Zealand small-town life that you wouldn't hear or see in any form on the internet - or many other places either.

I guess, the culmination of all of this writing about 'safe' was rewarded by the EIU June 2009 designation to New Zealand.

A country where YOU and your Family can live easily.....live safely.

The safest country in the world.

Just be careful.

Don't invite any of my fat coussies over to your house for dinner.
